"It was a simple time; crops grew in the fields and people harvested those crops. Those people traded their goods to others who turned the crops into food. Everyone knew where they stood and what they owned and for the most part, people were happy. But they were also ignorant and as unfortunate as it might be for some, ignorance rarely lasts. Torvala was a peaceful Kingdom but their people knew little about the world beyond their borders. There was no need for warriors, no need for weapons and no need for battle. They were sitting ducks when the Virani attacked. That is at least, until the Black Blade bonded with a Torvalan elf. Found in the darkest reaches of a cave never explored, the once abandoned mystical weapon called to a young farmer and willed him to venture into the darkness. Fueled by faith and a desperation to help his people, the elf made the journey accompanied only by his dog and two best friends. Obviously you can guess the rest of the story. The hardships were immeasurable and the journey hard, especially on a peaceful people but they found the weapon and returned to the surface, ready to face the invasion. While the Virani warriors were far better trained, they were met with some resistance; the Black Blade was able to teach its new wielder and he in turn taught others. The society of the Black Blade was formed and, although the process changed dramatically during the Extermination, today the Black Blades form and protect those who cannot defend themselves. They are the ultimate heroes of Nerbys." The Order of the Black Blade is a group of warriors who choose or are chosen by a powerful and sentient weapon as a bonded companion. The term Black Blade refers both to the weapon itself and it's wielder. The Black Blades have fluctuated in rarity over the generations of their existence and the location in question. Some places (like the Academies) stock pile Black Blades in the hopes of bonding a secret weapon. But there are still some scattered in the wild and, much like the original, they call to nearby people with potential and those brave enough to come to the call might bond.
Some Blades are pickier then others, much like a living breathing creature, they can be more specific int he warrior they are looking to bond with while others just want anyone willing to run into the fire. The Blades are nearly indestructible and after the death of one Bond, they often move on to a new one. Some Blades have a longer grieving process and others care more about being back in the action. Every Black Blade is different. Despite their name, Black Blades do not need to be a bladed weapon. It is a common misconception, one that many Blades deal with regularly. They are, however, always entirely black. It is unknown who or what forges the Black Blades, as none of the weapons will speak of their creation and many believe they are left over from a time before the Divines. Some blacksmiths have been lucky enough to work with or study blades to learn enough of their properties to mend or fix broken pieces, because while they are indestructible, they do still take damage and loose effectiveness. There is quite a bit of debate over weather a Black Blade (the person) is born or made. Some believe you either are or are not a potential (much like someone either has magic or does not) and others believe that if you train enough and make yourself worthy, a Blade may bond with anyone. It is all speculation. There are 13 months in one year, each with 28 days. There are still 7 days in a week, and 52 weeks in a year. There is also one extra day, the Winter Solstice, that does not belong to any month, but marks the transition between years.

It is the the most common religion practiced and much of the common vocabulary used for the calender and holidays come from the Order. For centuries, the world lived in quiet. Barren and raw, Asaria was naked and wild. Then came Deer. Gentle and delicate but timid, Deer was nervous about her place in this lonely world. But she explored and learned and soon, she gained confidence and Lion was created. Lion traveled the lands and his bravery knew no bounds. But as time wore on, he learned that bravery had to be tamed by knowledge. He took to the skies and Falcon was born. Falcon flew across the world, discovering mountains and valleys, trees and rivers until he knew everything the world offered. But learning can make one tired and soon, Falcon found he needed to rest. He found himself a cavern deep in the bowels of a mountain and rested. In that time, Bear was made. She slept and recovered and grew strong again. But her sleep was so deep and so peaceful that she would not have woken up if Deer had not nudged her. And so, reluctantly, Bear awoke and allowed Deer to roam again. The Beasts and the seasons came and went for many rotations of their time. They lived in harmony and what seemed like peace with Deer, in all her gentleness, beginning the turning of the wheel. But eventually discord began to stir between them. Bear wanted to sleep longer and Lion wanted more time to roam. Falcon believed that the world should be evenly shared and Deer stood as mediator. But the damage was done and from the arguing and turmoil rose Fox. Fox was cunning and shifty and desired to shatter the bonds between the four. Bear and Lion were at particular odds and fought, their ferocity and strength constantly matching the other. And just when the world seemed it would split at the seams, Deer drew their attention to herself. But Bear was as loyal as she was fierce and remembered that Lion was her friend. And in her need to protect those closest to her, she remembered that Fox was the true deceiver. Centuries upon centuries have passed and the seasons change, as do who holds the power. Deer rules the Spring and sees that growth and rebirth populate Asaria. Lion rules the Summer and ensures that the sun shines brightly and keeps life strong. Falcon begins the transition into longer nights and colder winds but keeps the balance through the shifting breeze. And Bear and Fox continue to fight in the cold of Winter, creating a variety of possibility. When the nights are calm and the air is chill, Bear slumbers peacefully. But when the cold is biting and the winds are howling, Fox is gaining the upper paw. But before either one can gain a true victory, Deer steps in to keep the peace and calm the savage seasons. And so, the wheel of the year. Spralla the Deer of Peace (Spring) Somnar the Lion Strong (Summer) Otone the Falcon Wise (Autumn) Witrah the Bear Fierce (Winter) Razhda the Silver Fox (Winter) |
